Lebara — Brand Review 2026
Founded 2001 · London, UK · SFR-network MVNO
"More data and international minutes per euro than the big three will ever offer."
Lebara is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that built its name doing one thing relentlessly well: selling data and international calling at prices the incumbent operators can't match. Founded in 2001 around the needs of migrant communities who call home across borders, the brand has evolved into a fully digital, no-frills mobile operator. In France it leases capacity on the SFR network — 4G, 4G+ and 5G — and passes the savings on to customers through prepaid-style plans that renew every 30 days with no commitment, no RIB (bank details) required, and a free SIM or eSIM.
Our review assessed Lebara across value for money, network coverage and speed, plan flexibility, international calling, and customer support. We tested a spread of its plans — from the entry 40 Go tier at around €3.99/month up to the flagship 250 Go 5G plan at roughly €7.99–8.99/month — against Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom, Free, and other MVNOs. Our five-member panel logged two months of daily use, including data speed tests, domestic and international calls, EU roaming, and support requests through the MyLebara app.

How We Tested Lebara
Every SIM card and eSIM in this review was purchased anonymously at standard retail rates — no review units were accepted and Lebara had no advance knowledge of the review. We activated each plan as a new customer, then measured download and upload speeds with Speedtest and nPerf at multiple times of day across urban, suburban, and rural locations in mainland France. We tested voice quality and connection reliability for both domestic calls and international calls to several of the destinations Lebara includes free of charge. We also activated EU/DOM roaming, logged support response times via the MyLebara app and online chat, and tracked data consumption accuracy over a full billing cycle.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
- Best-in-class price-per-gigabyte — the 250 Go 5G plan is one of the cheapest data deals in France
- True no-commitment model: cancel anytime, no RIB (bank details) required, easy online signup
- Strong international calling inclusion to dozens of destinations — Lebara's heritage strength
- Genuine 5G access on the SFR network at budget prices, not a throttled imitation
- Free SIM/eSIM, 100% online activation, and a clean, functional MyLebara app
Weaknesses
- Digital-only customer support — no physical stores, and support is chat/email rather than a phone hotline
- As an MVNO, data speeds can be deprioritized when the SFR network is congested
- Limited EU/DOM roaming data (roughly 7–9 Go depending on the plan) is easy to exhaust on trips
- No MMS support on several plans — a surprising omission for a modern operator
- SFR network coverage, while solid, still trails Orange in some rural areas
Why You Should Trust This Review
Every plan in this review was purchased at retail price by PickWealthy. We have no financial relationship with Lebara, and the company had no advance knowledge of this review. Our five-member panel reflects diverse usage patterns — a heavy data streamer, an international caller who phones family abroad weekly, a frequent EU traveler, a budget-conscious student, and a rural resident who pushes coverage limits. The two-month testing period exceeds the typical "one-week SIM swap" favored by deal blogs, letting us surface issues that only emerge over full billing cycles, such as roaming data depletion and support responsiveness.

Rating Breakdown
How Lebara Compares
Against Orange, SFR, and Bouygues Telecom, Lebara loses on in-store presence, phone support, and maximum roaming allowances — but beats them decisively on price per gigabyte, with no commitment and no RIB required. Against Free (Iliad), Lebara's plans are often cheaper at the high-data end and simpler to understand, though Free bundles more fixed-line and TV services if you want a multi-service household. Against fellow MVNOs like Auchan Télécom and Prixtel, Lebara's 5G data allowances and international calling inclusions are consistently more generous. The trade-off is uniform across the MVNO category: you give up a human support network and peak-hour network priority to unlock savings that, for a 250 Go plan, can exceed €15 a month versus an incumbent equivalent.
The Verdict
Final Verdict: The Budget 5G Champion with a Digital-Only Catch
Lebara does the core job of a mobile operator — giving you generous data and reliable calling for very little money — better than almost anyone in France. The flagship 250 Go 5G plan is a genuine market anomaly: real SFR 5G, no commitment, no RIB, and a monthly price the incumbents can't approach. For heavy data users, international callers, and anyone who refuses to be locked into a 12- or 24-month contract, Lebara is the obvious answer.
The compromises are real but predictable. Customer support is digital-only, so there's no store to walk into when something goes wrong, and peak-hour data speeds can dip when the SFR network is under load. The limited EU roaming allowance (7–9 Go) is fine for weekend trips but not for extended stays, and the missing MMS support is a strange, avoidable gap. None of this changes the verdict: if you value price, data volume, and freedom over a polished support experience, Lebara is the budget 5G champion of 2026. If you need in-person help or frequent heavy roaming, an incumbent — or a higher-touch MVNO — remains the safer bet.
